The finals of the Halifax Association’s Rose Bowl competition and it’s supplementary , the Ewart Lord Trophy , sponsored by SDH Holdings were both played at Hove Edge on Friday.
In the Rose Bowl final, between Akroydon Victoria ‘A’ and Mytholmroyd ‘A’, Akroydon Vics were receiving 10 start but their advantage was soon wiped away as Mytholmroyd claimed three of the first four games to single figures. Richard Helliwell led from the start to win by 21-7 against Dale Holdsworth, Kieran Bannister finished with a break of 13 to win 21-4 against Mick Uttley and Gareth Nicholson’s early break of ten took him to a 21-6 victory over Steve Livesey. John Williamson was on course to lessen the damage for the ‘Vics ‘ as he led by 16-7 against David Warburton. but Warburton fought back with a break of 13 to reach all-but before Williamson ran out to snatch victory by 21-20.
With Mytholmroyd ahead by 90-55, Baily Dawson closed the gap with his 21-2 against Clive Austin while his team-mate Mark McGorlick won by 21-17 against Roy Nicholson. Graham Halliday came close to another victory for Akroydon Victoria, leading by 20-16 against Mark Jeffreys but Jeffreys finished well to scrape home by 21-20. Danny Barker’s 21-13 against Ray Stansfield maintained Mytholmroyd’s dominance.
The last two games were shared, with Akroydon Victoria’s Julien Dawson edging the battle of the captains by 21-19 against Tony Bannister and Richard Priestley completing a 191-167 victory for Mytholmroyd with his 21-16 win against Dave Stewart,
In accepting the Trophy, Mytholmroyd captain , Tony Bannister dedicated the win to Scott McHugh, a member of the c;ub who died last year at a tragically young age.
In the Ewart Lord Trophy final West End Faced Elland C.A & B. C, who were receiving 12 start. West End began well and were ahead after the first four games , largely thanks to John Hamer’s 21-10 against Steve Kenworthy and Alwyn Guide’s 21-13 against Ken Walker. For Elland , Matthew Holden won by 21-12 aginst Joe Jolly and Barry Nichol scraped home by 21-20 against Bernard Megson
From then on , Elland dominated, winning the next five games. Damien Talbot finished with a break of seven to win by 21-12 against Michael Homes and John Holden fought back from 2-8 to score a 21-14 victory over Ray Lorimer. David Greenwood was 11-3 down to Barrie Morgan but staged an impressive fight back to win by 21-17 and Andy Brewer won by 21-16 against Craig Ogilvie.
Martin Murphy’s 21-12 aginst John Krenc was a third win for West End and Stuart Rodd’s 21 -16 against Alec Byrnes completed a 218-206 victory for Elland.
