David Warburton, of Mytholmroyd BC won the Sowerby Bridge Association’s Percy Carter Merit for a second at Hill Crest last Wednesday with a 21-9 victory in the final against Aaron Bottomley, of Pellon SC.

Warburton, whose first success was in 2008, trailed by 7-11 in his quarter-final against West End’s Alwin Guide but responded with a break of ten to open up, a commanding lead of 10 points and went on to win by 21-15. In his semi-final he faced his Mytholmroyd team-mate Mark Jeffreys who took an early7-4 lead before Warburton drew level at 7. The two were still level at 10 and 13 but Warburton then pulled away to win by 21-17.

Bottomley made a confident start to his first game against David Hemsley, of Hove Edge, to lead by 8-3. Hemsley replied with break of seven to take a two point lead. Bottomley recovered to level the scores at 12 and 15 before winning by 21-16. In the semi-final., Bottomley again began well to lead by 6-2 against Clayton’s Myles Summers. Summers fought back to draw level at 7-7 but Bottomley dominated the middle of the game to go ahead by17-12. Summers rallied again to within a single chalk at 16-17 but Bottomley then ran out to win by 21-16.

In the final, Warburton continued as before but Bottomley was unable to maintain the excellent form he had shown in the earlier rounds, Warburton raced into a 10-3 lead and conceded only six ends to his opponent on his way to a 21-9 victory.
