Akroydon Victoria ‘A’ won the Sowerby Bridge Association’s 4-Person Knock-out, sponsored by Linda Stewart at Hove Edge on Tuesday. They defeated Pellon ‘A’ by 87-68 in the final.
Akroydon Victoria faced Luddendenfoot ‘A’ in their semi-final, winning three of the four games. Julian Dawson did most of the damage with his 21-8 against Phil Brown and was ably supported by Graham Halliday, who won by 21-11 against Johnny Robinson and Bailey Dawson, who began slowly to lead Steve Bridges by 11-10, broke away with a break of eight and went on to win by 21-14. Dale Holdsworth was on course to complete a clean sweep for the Vicks when leading Ben Halliday by 12-8 but the in-form Halliday recovered with a break of nine and went on to win by 21-14. Akroydon Victoria won by 82-63.
Pellon took on Mytholmroyd ‘A’ in their semi-final, winning all four games to cruise into the final. Glenn Normanton set the tone with a 21-9 victory over David Greenwood backed up by Peter Craigie’s 21-12 against Ann Greenwood and Martin Dodd’s 21-14 against Darren Metcalfe.
Rodney Lowe might have gained a consolation win for Mytholmroyd when leading Aaron Bottomley by 13-6 and 14-10 but Bottomley fought back with a break of eight and went on to win by 21-16, completing a 91-66 victory for Pellon.
Akroydon Victory dropped only two chalks in the final, with three wins and a 19, although Pellon had chances in all four games. Dale Holdsworth was always ahead in his game against Peter Craigie, opening with a six break and going on to win by 21-12, but Graham Halliday trailed by 7-11 and 10-13 against Martin Dodd before finishing strongly to win by 21-15. Pellon’s David Craigie was well in his game against Julian Dawson, tying the scores at 11 and 13 before Dawson ran out to win by 21-13. The remaining game, between Pellon’s Aaron Bottomley and Bailey Dawson was the closest. Bottomley edged the early ends but Dawson recovered to take the lead at 13-12. In a tight finish, Bottomley came back to lead by19-16, and after Dawson had responded to draw level, finished with two singles to give Pellon their only win by 21-29 while Akroydon Victoria collected the Malcolm Edmondson Trophy with an 87-68 victory.
